This program was intended to introduce STEAM concepts through stories and exploration activity stations to families with children ages 3-8 years old.
Intro song: Hello Friends
(sign language action song for the words hello, friends, math, fun, and time)
Hello friends,
Hello friends,
Hello friends,
It's time to say hello.
Hello math,
Hello math,
Hello math,
It's time to have some fun.
Demonstration and Storytime:
· Show the word cards for Symmetry
and asymmetric. Talk about
what these words mean.
·
Show pictures of
symmetry. Show how to fold them to make
mirror reflections on each side of the fold line.
· Show cut out letters of B, D, E, and P. Talk about how these are (or aren’t) symmetrical.
·
Hand out a die cut shape
to each child. Invite them to tape their
shape on the white board under the category (symmetrical, asymmetrical) they
think it belongs under.
·
Read:
Seeing Symmetry by Loreen Leedy
·
Instruct on how to use
the stations.
Stations:
Station #1- Symmetrical
pattern blocks
The children use the
colorful foam pattern/fraction blocks to create symmetrical designs. (This activity was done on the floor.)
Station #2 – Monster symmetry
(as seen at https://room-mom101.blogspot.com/2012/06/teaching-symmetry.html)
Children squirt globs of
paint on one half of a piece of white art paper. Then they fold over the paper. When they unfold the paper, they will have a
symmetrical paint design. The children can
then add googly eyes and white paper teeth to their design to make fun monster faces.
Station #3 – Symmetry worksheet
(that I found at https://www.greatschools.org/gk/worksheets/lines-of-symmetry-3/)
I’m not a great fan of
worksheets, but this one was simple and encouraged the children to think how to
continue a line of symmetry in a simple drawing. I overheard some great conversations between children and their caregivers working on this worksheet together.
