Summer Reading presentations, 2026 edition

This was another light year on elementary school summer reading presentations.  Instead, we concentrted on tabling at end-of-school-year parties at our area elementary schools.

I did go out to a couple of Early Learning Centers to talk about summer reading and then share a storytime book.  I tried out one new book while bringing along two other favorites.  The kindergarten and preschool classes loved these books!

Bark, George by Jules Feiffer

Crash, Splash, or Moo! by Bob Shea

Mr. Fox's Game of "No!" by David LaRochelle, illustrated by Mike Wohnoutka

Storytime at Summer Day Camp, Week 6

My weekly storytime at a local summer camp for 5- and 6-year-olds.  It is a short storytime with a simple art project, but sometimes when it is hot outside that is about all the children need.

Books:

Hoot Owl, Master of Disguise by Sean Taylor, illustrated by Jean Jullien

Crick, Crack, Crow! by Janet Lord, illustrated by Julie Paschkis

Craft activity:

The children made a place for their paper owls to hide in.  Each child got one die cut owl plus a sheet of green paper.  The green paper had lines for creating fringe cut grass and a line for where to fold the grass.  Then, they used a little bit of glue from a glue stick to hide their owls in the grass.  The campers showed a lot of creativity in coloring and hiding their owls.

Storytime at Summer Day Camp, Week 4

Craft activity:

I used clip art to make a bird silhouette that the campers colored and cut out with scissors.  (I love to inflict scissor cutting on these kiddos!)  After folding the bird in half, they taped it to one end of a straw.  Now they had a flapping, flying bird.

This year was a little light on elementary school summer reading presentations.  But that is alright by me because my summer looks very busy!  I tried out a new book with the kindergarten classes and they loved it.  Seriously, you should not trust fish...

Mini-Camper Summer Camp Storytime Week 8

This summer I was invited to give a special weekly storytime at a local summer camp for 5- and 6-year-olds.

Books:

I Don't Want To Be A Frog by Dev Petty, illustrated by Mike Boldt
The Wide-Mouthed Frog: A Pop-Up Book by Keith Faulkner, illustrated by Jonathan Lambert

Craft activity:

We made folding frogs with a surprise in its mouth. I found this craft idea at https://www.thebestideasforkids.com/frog-folding-surprise/.  The surprise was anything the children wanted to draw in the mouth.  I also gave them small pieces of scrap craft foam strips to use as a tongue.  I loved the imaginative colors the children gave their frogs!

Book:

Knight Owl by Christopher Denise
