Spring Animals - Baby Toddler Storytime

A Tuesday morning storytime for ages 0-2 years old.

Opening #1: Skinnamarink (action song from Car Songs: Songs to Sing Anywhere by Dennis Buck from Kimbo)

Opening #2: Sticky, Sticky Bubblegum (fingerplay)

Sticky, sticky bubblegum, bubblegum, bubblegum;
Sticky, sticky bubblegum;
Stuck to your __________.
1, 2, 3, PULL!

(Repeat with more body parts)

Book: It’s Spring by Samantha Berger and Pamela Chanko, illustrated by Melissa Sweet

Themed activity #1: “Itsy Bitsy Spider” traditional fingerplay

The itsy-bitsy spider crawled up the water spout.
Down came the rain, and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun, and dried up all the rain,
Then the itsy-bitsy spider went up the spout again.

The great big hairy spider crawled up the water spout.
Down came the rain, and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun, and dried up all the rain,
Then the great big hairy spider went up the spout again.

Themed activity #2: “If You’re Happy and You Know It” traditional action song from Songs for Wiggleworms

Lap rhyme #1: Tick Tock (lap bounce)

(bounce baby from leg to leg)

Tick tock, tick tock, I’m a little cuckoo clock.
Tick, tock, tick tock, now it is one o’clock… Cuckoo!
(raise baby up for each cuckoo)

(repeat for other times of day)
Now it is two o’clock… Cuckoo! Cuckoo!

Now it is three o’clock… Cuckoo! Cuckoo! Cuckoo!

Lap rhyme #2: Counting Bubbles (counting rhyme I learned during a BrainDance workshop)

One bubble, two bubbles, three bubbles, top.
(pat legs with hands for each number chanted, then place hands on top of head)

Three bubbles, four bubbles, five bubbles, drop.
(pat legs with hands for each number chanted, then drop hands to lap)

Six bubbles, seven bubbles, nine bubbles, pop.
(pat legs with hands for each number chanted, then clap hands loudly in front of body)

Ten little bubbles floating down!
(twinkle hands down to floor)

Now let’s blow _____ bubbles.
(This is a breath exercise.  Pick a number and pretend to blow that number of bubbles through hand.  Don’t forget to pop the bubbles with a loud clap after blowing it up.  I count the bubble while I do the clap.)

Lap rhyme #3: We’re Making a Purple Stew (story time song I saw a in a video from New York Public Library)

We’re making a {_purple_} stew,
Whip-whip-, whip-whip.
(pretend to stir a big pot in front of your body)

We’re making a {_purple_} stew,
Scooby-dooby-doo.

With {_purple_} potatoes,
(use one hand to pretend to throw potatoes from your shoulder into the pretend pot)

And {_purple_} tomatoes,
(use your other hand to pretend to throw tomatoes from your shoulder into the pretend pot)

And even a {_purple_} you!
(tickle baby’s tummy)

**What other colors should we do?
(repeat the song with other colors)

Lap rhyme #4: Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes (traditional body parts action song)

Head, shoulders, knees, and toes,
Knees and toes.
Head, shoulders, knees and toes,
Knees and toes.
And eyes and, ears and, mouth and nose.
Head, shoulders, knees and toes,
Knees and toes.

***Literacy tip: When singing, children hear the same short sentences over an over.  This helps them recognize simple sentence structures and patterns.

Transition: Come 'A' Look And See (fingerplay song I first picked up at a workshop conducted by Jane Cobb but can also be found on the music CD The Baby Record by Bob McGrath)

Come a' look a' see, here's my mama,
(point to thumb)
Come a' look a' see, here's my papa,
(point to index finger)
Come a' look a' see, my brother tall,
(point to tall finger)
Sister, baby,
(point to ring, then baby finger)
I love them all.
(Kiss the fingertips of your finger family)

Letter of the day: "S” is for spring

Flannelboard: Five Little Chickadees (I found this rhyme in a Wild Animal Baby magazine Dec/Jan 2009).

Closing song with egg shakers: “Bublebee Buzz Buzz” from Buzz Buzz by Laurie Berkner

Sing-a-Song Storytime: Five Little Pumpkins

With the pandemic closing the library and all large gatherings, my library took its time deciding how to get back into the storytime groove.  In the Fall of 2020, I created this video storytime series along with a coworker, who is a talented musician, to get young children moving around and singing.  It is filled with lots of favorite storytime songs and rhymes, and of course a book!  I really wanted the grown-ups watching along with the kiddos to learn the songs, so I used a split screen technique on the videos to display the words to the songs/rhymes while I am singing and acting them out.

Opening song - Skinnamarink (https://youtu.be/95JkQfANW9M)

Action song - Spiders Go Marching (action song to the tune of "Ants Go Marching")

The spiders go marching one by one,
hurrah, hurrah!
The spiders go marching one by one,
hurrah, hurrah!
The spiders go marching one by one,
The little one stops to suck its thumb,
And they all go marching up,
To the tree,
On Hallowee-een.

The spiders go marching two by two...
The little one stops to tie its shoe...

The spiders go marching three by three...
The little one stops to hug a tree...

The spiders go marching four by four...
The little one stops to close the door...

Transition sit down song - Tommy & Tammy Thumb (fingerplay)

Tommy Thumb up,
Tommy Thumb down,
Tommy Thumb dancing all around town.

Tammy Thumb out,
Tammy Thumb in,
Tammy Thumb dancing all in a spin.

Dancing, dancing, dancing,
Dance them on your knees,
Dance them on your head,
Dance them on your shoulders,
Then tuck them into bed.

Book - Five Little Pumpkins illustrated by Dan Yaccarino

Action song - Jack-O-Lantern, Jack-O-Lantern (action rhyme adapted by Carol Hopkins, similar to "Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear Turn Around")

Jack-O-Lantern, Jack-O-Lantern turn around.
Jack-O-Lantern, Jack-O-Lantern roll on the ground.
Jack-O-Lantern, Jack-O-Lantern dance on your toes.
Jack-O-Lantern, Jack-O-Lantern light up your nose.
Jack-O-Lantern, Jack-O-Lantern reach up high.
Jack-O-Lantern, Jack-O-Lantern jump to the sky.
Jack-O-Lantern, Jack-O-Lantern smile with heat.
Jack-O-Lantern, Jack-O-Lantern find your seat.

Action song - See the Pumpkin (sung with a ball or pumpkin, adapted from a song found on the internet)

See the pumpkin,
(roll the ball one way)
See the orange,
(roll the ball the other way)
See the candy we can eat!
(sing language for "candy" and "eat")

Though it's night-time,
(hold ball high in the air like the moon)
It's a sweet time,
(sign language for "candy")
I don't mind saying, "Trick or Treat!"
(throw the ball into the air and catch it)

Closing song - excerpt from the Carpenter's song "Sing a Song" (also a classic Sesame Street song https://youtu.be/-nI7IfwLoBI)

Diary of a Spider

Library program for children ages 4 to 12 and their families.

The program starts off with a viewing of the movie Diary of a Spider produced by Weston Woods, based on the book by Doreen Cronin.

The movie was followed by 3 stations:

1. Itsy Bitsy Spider - Children color and cut out a house, then slide a spider ring onto a bendable straw. Now the straw is taped to the house to resemble a water-spout. Move the spider up and down the spout while singing the song! (The house for this craft project came from Mailbox Preschool magazine October/November 2007, page 25.)

2. Pin the spider on the web - A large spider web was drawn onto a large piece of black paper with a silver marker. Children had spider cut outs to add pieces of double sided tape onto. Blind fold the children up and watch how close to the spider web they can stick that spider.

3. Spider hat - Measure long, thick black rectangluar strips of paper around child's head, overlap and tape ends together to create a headband shape. Cut out and decorate small colored square pieces to make eyes. Glue eyes to the hat band. Take 8 long, skinny colored rectangular strips for spider legs. Glue one end of each skinny strip to the inside edge of the hat band. Decorate and wear your hat to celebrate our spider friends.
