Literacy activity: “The Ants Go Marching” (traditional children’s counting song)

The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one,
The little one stops to suck his thumb
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching two by two, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching two by two, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching two by two,
The little one stops to tie his shoe
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching three by three, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching three by three, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching three by three,
The little one stops to climb a tree
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching four by four, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching four by four, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching four by four,
The little one stops to shut the door
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Book #1: Ice Cream Face by Heidi Woodward Sheffield

Stand-up activity: “If You’re Happy and You Know It” from Wee Sing Children’s Songs & Fingerplays

Sit-down activity: Put Your Ice Cream Up High (adaptation of a rhyme I found on the Librionyian blog to the tune of “Famer In the Dell”)

(Pretend to hold an ice cream cone.  Suite actions to words.)

Put your ice cream up high
Put your ice cream down low
Hold your ice cream, go round and round
Round! And round! And round!

Put your ice cream up high
Put your ice cream down low
Put your ice cream on the ground
Eeeewww! Don’t do that!

Put your ice cream up high
Put your ice cream down low
Lick your ice cream ‘til it’s all gone
It’s yummy in my tummy!

Transition: Tommy & Tammy Thumb (fingerplay)

Tommy Thumb up,
Tommy Thumb down,
Tommy Thumb dancing all around town.

Tammy Thumb out,
Tammy Thumb in,
Tammy Thumb dancing all in a spin.

Dancing, dancing, dancing,
Dance them on your knees,
Dance them on your head,
Dance them on your shoulders,
Then tuck them into bed.

***Parent literacy tip: Let children hear lots of language by talking to them constantly about the pictures, or anything else connected to the books you share together.

Book #2: Maisy Makes Lemonade by Lucy Cousins

Book #3: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

Closing music with bean bags: “Bean Bag Rock” from Bean Bag Activities & Coordination Skills by Georgiana Stewart

Art activity: Stickers and dot markers on cardstock sun visors.

Other activity #1: Explore the picnic and watermelon toys.
