Birds Storytime - Preschool

Preschool Storytime for 3-1/2 to 5 year olds:
  • Opening – We Dove In the Ocean from Dippin' In the Paintbox by Gail and Trisha
  • Alphabet activity - Pull a letter card out of a Dr. Seuss hat and then put them back in the hat as the letter is called
  • Book #1 – Birdsongs by Betsy Franco and Steve Jenkins
  • Activity – This Little Bird (action rhyme that I picked up somewhere)
  • Flannelboard - Bluebird, Bluebird Through My Window
  • Book #2 – Pigeon Wants a Puppy by Mo Willems
  • Book #3 -I Bought A Baby Chicken by Kelly Milner Halls, illustrated by Karen Stormer Brooks
  • Activity – Here's a Little Egg (action rhyme I have seen in a number of places, but I first found at http://www.geocities.com/mystorytime/chickens/htm#Fingerplays)
Here's a little egg, so smooth and white
(sit criss cross, head down, arms in lap)
Peck, peck, peck, there's something inside!
Peck, peck, peck, here comes a little beak.
(move head up and make beak with fingers)
Peck, peck, peck here come two little feet.
(extend feet)
Peck, peck, peck, here come the wings.
(flap arms as wings)
Peck, peck, peck, and a pick, pick, pick,
(move to squatting position)
And crack, crack, CRACK!
Out pops the baby chick!
(stand up, arms above head)

Storytime for 0 to 24 months old:
  • Opening: "Baby Hop" from Diaper Gym by Priscilla Hegner and Rose Grasselli
  • Body part rhyme: Everybody Knows I Love My Toes (adapted from a rhyme I saw performed by Margaret Read Macdonald)
Everybody knows I love my toes!
Everybody knows I love my toes!
I love my ear,
My eyes,
My elbows and my nose.
Everybody knows I love my toes!
(repeat and name other body parts)
  • Lap bounce: Hanky Panky

(have your child sitting on your lap and bounce along to the song)
Down by the banks of the Hanky Panky,
Where the bullfrogs jump from bank to bank,
With a hip, hop, hippity hop,
Jump off the lilypad,
(lift baby up)
And kerplop!
(lower baby between your legs)

  • Tickle: Round and Round the Garden

(with index finger, make a circle on baby's tummy)
Like a teddy bear

(walk fingers up chest)

  • Book #1 – Pie In the Sky by Lois Ehlert
  • Activity – Little Bird (action rhyme I picked up in the book Toddle On Over by Robin Works Davis, but I have since seen in other sources)
I saw a little bird go hop, hop, hop.
(jump up and down)
I told the little bird to stop, stop, stop.
(hold up hand, palm out)
I went to the window to say "How do you do?"
(bow)
He wagged his little tail and away he flew.
(wiggle but, and then flap arms in flying motion)

  • Book #2 – Birds by Kevin Henkes, illustrated by Laura Dronzek
  • Activity – Two Little Blackbirds Sitting On a Fence

  • Craft – Triangle bird body with tissue paper wings through a slit in the body, with circle head, a little triangle beak, and color markers to decorate with.

  • Activity – Shake My Sillies Out (action song from More Singable Songs by Raffi)
  • Math/Science Activity - Graph favorite color hat: Hand out different colored hat pictures. Then tape these pictures on the wall in the form of a simple pictorial bar graph.
  • Book #2 – Hats, Hats, Hats by Ann Morris, photographs by Ken Heyman (big book)
  • Activity – Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (action rhyme)
  • Closing - Rhythm sticks using "Goin' On a Bear Hunt" from Kids In Action by Greg and Steve
  • Craft – Glue buttons onto paper plate crown hats

  • Activity – Hickory Dickory Dock (fingerplay)
Hickory dickory dock,
The mouse ran up the clock.
(run fingers up arm to high overhead)
The clock struck one.
(clap once)
The mouse ran down.
(run fingers down arm and down body)
Hickory dickory dock.

Repeat with:
...the clock struck two, the mouse said boo!
...the clock struck three, the mouse said whee!
...the clock struck four, there is no more.

  • Activity – Two Little Hands (action rhyme)
Two little hands go clap, clap, clap.

  • Activity – Like An Animal (action rhyme I found somewhere)
Can you fly like an owl?
Can you jump like a frog?
Can you walk like a duck?
Can you strr-eetch like a cat?
Can you bark like a dog?
Can you sit like a kid at storytime?
  • Flannelboard – Count the berry circles on top of a canoe (like the canoe in Jamberry)
  • Book #2 – Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood
  • Activity – Ladybug (adaptation to a fingerplay I found in a book about baby lapsit storytimes, sorry I don't remember which book)
Ladybug, ladybug fly out of the farm
and land right on my little arm.
Ladybug, ladybug fly out fo the tree
and land right on my little knee.
Ladybug, ladybug fly out of the rose
and land right on my little nose.
Ladybug, ladybug fly out of the chair
and land right on my own sweet hair.
