Sledding in the Snow Storytime

Storytime for 1 to 3 year olds:
  • Opening - Skinnamarink, Sticky Sticky Bubblegum

  • Stand-up Activity – This Is the Way We Play In the Snow (action song written by Carol Hopkins to the tune of "Here We go Round the Mulberry Bush")
This is the way we stomp through the snow, stomp through the snow, stomp through the snow.
This is the way we stomp through the snow,
When we go out to play.
This is the way we hop through the snow, hop through the snow, hop through the snow.
This is the way we hop through the snow,
When we go out to play.

(Repeat with other action words)

  • Bridge - Open, Shut Them (fingerplay)
Open, shut them
(open and close hands)
Open, shut them
Give a little clap (clap)
Open, shut them
Open, shut them
Put them in your lap
(put hands in lap)

Creep them, creep them
Under your chin
(creep fingers up chest)
Open your mouth, but don't put them in
(do as words say)

Open, shut them
Open, shut them
Give a little clap
Open shut them
Open shut them
Put them in your lap

  • Flannelboard - Winter Snowflakes (counting down rhyme I found in a Preschool Mailbox magazine, August/September 2008, page 28)

  • Letter of the Day - "S" is for snow

  • Activity – "The Freeze" action song from Dancing Feet by Carole Peterson

  • Art Experience – Q-tip painting with white paint on dark blue construction paper to create a unique snow scene

  • Reflection - Oh boy!  This was just one of those days when the whole group seemed unable to follow directions or keep their hands to themselves. I almost didn't do the flannelboard, but then attempted to do it. Unfortunately, a small group of kiddos would not keep their hands off the flannelboard pieces. Normally this would not be a problem, except once one child took off a snowflake then all the others did the same thing. After this happened three times (twice before I could even start), I decided to cut the rhyme short and move on to something else. I ended up cutting my next book short and skipping ahead to the scarves. This was also a huge group. I counted 54 toddlers in the room.  Somedays this happens and you just keep on moving...
